Bedrooms are a sort of sanctuary…an oasis…an escape from the busyness of life. It’s where our day starts and where we want it to peacefully end. And of all the rooms in your humble abode, this one should be and feel separate enough from the rest of the house. A perfect bedroom is the one that makes you “feel” at home, safe – sheltering you from the worries of the world while rebooting your energy to wake up fresh another day and take over the world.
There are many styles to choose from: Modern, Contemporary, and Traditional, just to name a few. But let’s take a look at one that lets you “throw caution to the wind”…one that “breaks the rules”…one that is very personal but unconventional in style at the same time. I’m talking about the Bohemian, or Boho, style.
Bohemian is inspired by people who choose to lead an unconventional life. Whether you want to call it Boho or bohemian, this chic style is full of different colors, patterns, textures, themes, and decorations that are used to create an artistic aesthetic. From modern and trendy to rustic and vintage, bohemian room décor can add character, personality, and whimsical charm for a small space or master bedroom. It embraces the unexpected; it’s a carefree and casual vibe because it has no fixed rules. This unconventional, artistic style dates all the way back to the 1800s and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
If mixing and matching various concepts, adding chic accents to offset woven materials, and throwing in some vintage pieces and indoor plants sounds like the warm and cozy bedroom of your dreams, you can turn your bedroom into your personal oasis with this style.
After what all of us have been through this past year, you may be yearning for lively, bright colors and patterns in your life! You may like your current décor, but perhaps it’s been that way for a few years. To “shake” things it up, you may be thinking about how to upcycle a flea market find, or how to incorporate lots of plants into your space, mix up prints and patterns, or purchase new boho room accessories, but you really aren’t sure where to start. That’s where an Interior Designer’s expertise comes into play.
The bohemian style room is perfect for those who are full of life and culture. The aesthetics in a boho room embrace that carefree, relaxed, and unique vibe and no two rooms are ever quite the same. The key to decorative accents in a boho room is to mix and match. It’s quite opposite of the more modern, minimalist’s bedroom in that boho room décor embraces the “more is more” philosophy. Vintage pieces with a slightly worn look as well as fringe, crochet, and macramé (yes, macramé is back!) are key décor elements in a boho room. Think of this space as a cozy, global-inspired hangout.
The following ideas represent one way to redo your bedroom.
The Bohemian style can take on a variety of forms, but one thing you’ll almost always find in a boho style bedroom is an eye-catching quilt or comforter on the bed. This is your chance to set the color palette for the room, so make it a bold one!
By keeping the wall color, furniture, lamps, and rug the same, you can transform your bedroom into a colorful, cozy boho one and a chic oasis, as well!
There can never be too many pillows in a boho bedroom! Boho style allows you to mix designs from around the world, like the Turkish influences of the kilim pillows and the Southwest style of the boucle fringe pillow.
The pillows are a great place to start experimenting with different textures and patterns, but you can also layer in a soft throw on the edge of the bed, a sculptural piece of art, or natural woven baskets. If your rug already has a bold pattern, look for bedding and pillow patterns that would play well with the rug. The trick to mixing patterns is varying the size of the pattern but also finding a way to tie them all together.
There is a real eclectic, homespun feel to boho style, so it’s the perfect opportunity to incorporate a few handmade elements. Remember, you don’t have to sew a pillow from scratch – you can start with a great store-bought one and make it even better.
For example, you can embroider a pillow with yarn. Remove the pillow insert; thread a length of yarn through a darning needle; and stich around the design by making long stitches. If you decide to use a throw, you can easily add a pop of color by running a length of pom-pom fringe down the side. The fringe can be glued on by using fabric glue, or if you have a sewing machine at home, you can also run a stitch through the trim.
And, this is where you can try your hand at macramé! Talk about a DIY, personal touch – WOW!
The sunburst mirror was switched out for a pretty metallic wall sculpture. It has that global look that works well with the boho style. And lastly, the final touch of natural greenery. For this bedroom, pretty vases are the perfect small size to put on the bedside table. But whether you incorporate a couple overflowing houseplants, or a vase of colorful flowers, they will always look at home in a boho room!
That’s it! If you’re looking to change up your bedroom, start with the bedding first. You might be surprised just how different the space can look without investing in new furniture.
And remember, the whole idea is to have a décor that defines you and not a streamlined home. Forget about what other people think or want. It’s your home so you should be the one who decides what you like and what you don’t. It’s what every home should be like but only the free-spirited have the courage to adopt a “throw caution to the wind” attitude!
