It’s Fall Y’all!

Fall – the time for all things cozy and gathering with those you love most. Your home should reflect who you are, but adding in a bit of seasonal décor is always a treat! Though some people thrive in the summer, others look forward to the season of sweater weather, pumpkin spice and apple-everything, and the joys of adding autumn décor and textures to every corner of their space.

Since fall has a massive fan base, there are many clever and classy ways to incorporate pumpkins, candles, chunky knits, dried flowers and wreaths into your indoor and living areas. The key is to keep it simple: Grinning Jack-o-lanterns flanking the front door, plaid throw blankets draped across sofas, wreaths crafted from vibrant leaves.

Transitioning your home from summer to fall might sound like an enormous task – two remarkably different seasons – but with these easy ideas, it can be a snap!

Create a Warm Welcome

The best place to start with fall decorating is your front door. It’s the easiest spot to spruce up your humble abode for the season. Add some stalks of wheat, swap your bright floral for deeper foliage and add pillows with moody colors to instantly warm your exterior décor.

Earthy, Nature-Inspired Colors

Orange, red, and yellow are the conventional colors of fall, but designers are increasingly turning to other nature-inspired hues to create refined fall color combinations. Many are gravitating toward warm, richer tones, such as deep greens, blues, and browns. Although these tones might not be traditional for fall, they feel appropriate for the season when used in deeper shades with warm undertones.

If you prefer to decorate with the classic colors of pumpkins and fall leaves, experiment by adding one or two unexpected shades to mix things up. Layer in a few pillows in a rich navy blue or line your dining room table with a forest green runner to set off the rest of your orange and yellow décor. You can also incorporate a bit of shine through metal decorative accents.

Textural Fabrics

As the weather turns colder, warm, comforting fabrics are a must, and texture is a key trend for 2021. Layering chunky knitted blankets and decorative pillows with velvets and other rich, textured fabrics will quickly transform your space from a light and airy summer feel to a warm and welcoming fall vibe. As you refresh your sofa or bedding, mix in a variety of fabrics in different textures, such as nubby bouclé, plush faux fur, and soft cashmere, for a cozy, layered look.

Cozy Sanctuaries

Take the change of seasons as an opportunity to carve out a special nook somewhere in your home. Outfit a window seat with cozy pillows and a plaid throw, or pull a comfy armchair into a corner to form a reading nook. You can also turn your bedroom into an autumn sanctuary by switching out summery colored bed linens with autumn-appropriate shades like burnt orange, sage green, mustard yellow and dusty teal.

Entertaining-Ready Spaces

After seasonal gatherings were put on pause last year, many of us are cautiously looking forward to welcoming family back into our homes again this fall. Many designers have noted that many of their clients are focused on preparing their homes to entertain again. For so long things have been left undone, so they feel a sense of urgency to get their home guest-ready for the season and upcoming holidays.

Common spaces such as the kitchen, dining room, and living areas will be the focus of fall decorating this year. As you ready your home for hosting, incorporate elements which cater to all five senses, including candles or essential oil diffusers. The power of scent can bring coziness into a space without much décor at all. What could be easier?

And don’t forget the kitchen!

The kitchen goes hand-in-hand with any dining updates you’ll do – making this an easy space to decorate! You don’t have to go over-the-top in order to cozy up the kitchen. Keep it simple by adding a few gourds or natural foliage found right in your back yard. And if you have an island in the kitchen, implement fall foliage or seasonal fresh flowers…they’re a gorgeous and timeless addition for the time of year. And be sure to swap out your summer bubbly for a lovely red wine, too!
